DIY Homemade Play Dough Infused w/ Essential Oils

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 1 cup Salt
  • 2 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 1 TBLS Oil (Coconut or other)
  • 2-3 drops of Any Essential Oil
  • Food Coloring (Optional)
  1. Mix Flour, Salt, Cream of Tartar, & Water in a medium Saucepan.
  2. Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes until desired consistency.
  3. Allow  to cool for several minutes, then split into 4 equal balls of dough.
  4. Add the Essential Oils of choice and Food coloring if desired.
  5. Seal In airtight containers- good for up to a month if stored in refrigerator.

Stir continuously. It thickens up pretty fast.

Choose some coloring and Essential Oils to add. I had my daughter poke a whole in the dough with her finger then I poured a few drops of Essential Oil in.  I added the scent first and kneaded it in. Then I had her poke another whole and I added the food coloring. Then knead until the color is consistent throughout. DONE. All in under 1/2 hour from start to finish. It costs pennies to make. I used Citrus Fresh, Lavender, Lemon, & Spearmint. But as you can see the colors didn't stay separated for very long :)  The look on her face...PRICELESS

No more spending money on store bought play dough in this household! I am so happy since I started making it this way. This was so fun and easy to do with my daughter that I had to share with as many mommies as possible.

I love the twist of essential oils being infused for a fantastic smell (I can't stand the smell of store bought brands) and can be therapeutic for your child too. Another way to sneak in the "good for you" stuff.  While my daughter is playing with the play dough the essential oils are being absorbed into her blood stream. For example, If I want her calm I will use Lavender oil in her dough, or peppermint essential oil elevates concentration, etc...   Plus if she decides to eat some of the play dough it is completely safe and non toxic so no worries there. Luckily, I don't have that problem, but you just never know.

The texture of this DIY play dough is very smooth and It turns out way better than the store bought stuff every time! It will last up to 2 weeks if placed in a plastic ziplock and stored in the refrigerator between uses.
